Vytorin product description
Vytorin is a lipid-lowering product, indicated for lowering total cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. The drug is used in patients who fails to control a cholesterol level by keeping to a diet. Vytorin is recommended for adults and adolescents aged above 10 years for treatment of:
- primary hypercholesterolaemia
- heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HeFH)
- homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HoFH)
Vytorin selectively inhibits cholesterol absorption in the bowel and cholesterol production by the body. Thus, the drug lowers a level of triglycerides, which increase the risk of heart disease.
A daily initial dose for adults varies from 10/10mg to 10/40mg. The recommended initial dose for adolescents is adjusted individually within the dosage of 10/10mg and 10/40mg per day.
When the drug is indicated to elderly patients, the therapeutic dose does not require to be adjusted. The indicated dose of Vytorin is to be taken once a day, in the evening, regardless of meals.
Do not take a double dose of a forgotten tablet. The patient should skip the missed dose and take the drug according to the scheduled dosage regimen.
The drug does not help in weight loss. Before the therapy, the patients should start a standard cholesterol-lowering diet and keep it throughout the course of Vytorin application. High doses of Vytorin increase the risk of myopathy (including rhabdomyolysis) in the patients. Therefore, the high-dose should be restricted (10/80mg) in the patients if no symptoms of muscle toxicity are observed.
The risk of muscle breakdown is increased in the patients with thyroid problems, kidney problems, hereditary muscle disorder, and in the patients older than 65 years. Coadministration of Vytorin with lipid-modifying doses of niacin-containing products is not recommended in Chinese and Asian patients.
Keep Vytorin in an original package or bottle tightly closed. Do not store Vytorin tablets near the heat or moisture and at temperature above 25°C.
Vytorin safety information
The patients taking verapamil, diltiazem, or amiodarone should not exceed a 10/20mg dose of Vytorin per day. The patients taking amlodipine together with Vytorin should be prescribed with a daily dose of Vytorin not exceeding 10/40mg.
Coadministration of Vytorin and fibrates or gemfibrozil is recommended to be avoided. The clinical studies have revealed that concomitant administration of digoxin and Vytorin may lead to an increase in digoxin plasma concentration. The patients taking colchicine should take caution while on Vytorin.

Vytorin side effects
Normally, Vytorin is well-tolerated and reported as a drug with a low incidence of any serious unwanted effects. About 5% of withdrawal of the hypercholesterolaemia treatment with the lipid metabolism regulator are reported to be caused by some unwanted effects. Most often Vytorin causes such unwanted effects, as headache, diarrhea, flatulence, URTI, myalgia, and increased ALT, AST or blood CK, which intensity does not depend on the used drug dosage.
