  • Product overview

Treating bacterial infections. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Maxaquin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It works by killing sensitive bacteria by stopping the production of essential proteins that the bacteria need to survive.

Do NOT use Maxaquin if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Maxaquin
  • you will be receiving a live typhoid vaccine during treatment with Maxaquin

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Maxaquin:

Some medical conditions may interact with Maxaquin. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, difficulty breathing, dizziness) to a fluoroquinolone antibiotic (eg, ciprofloxacin) in the past
  • if you have Alzheimer disease, a CNS disease, hardening of the arteries in the brain, a history of seizures, or increased pressure in the head
  • if you have kidney problems, heart problems, tendonitis, a stomach infection, diarrhea, or sensitivity to the sun

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Maxaquin. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Droperidol or foscarnet because their actions and side effects may be increased by Maxaquin
  • Typhoid live vaccine because its effectiveness may be decreased by Maxaquin

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Maxaquin may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Maxaquin:

Use Maxaquin as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Maxaquin may be taken with or without food.
  • Take Maxaquin with a full glass (8 oz/240 mL) of water. Also, drink several additional glasses of water each day.
  • Maxaquin should be taken 2 hours before or 4 hours after the following medicines: antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium; didanosine; iron salts (eg, ferrous sulfate); sucralfate; or zinc salts (eg, zinc sulfate).
  • Maxaquin works best if it is taken at the same time each day.
  • To clear up your infection completely, continue using Maxaquin for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days.
  • If you miss a dose of Maxaquin, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Maxaquin.

Important safety information:

  • Maxaquin may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Maxaquin. Using Maxaquin alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Maxaquin may cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths while using Maxaquin and for several days after stopping it. This reaction may occur even when you use sunscreens or sunblocks. It you experience skin burning, blisters, rash, itching, redness, or swelling, check with your doctor before taking additional doses. To reduce the risk of sensitivity to the sun, take Maxaquin at least 12 hours before exposure to the sun (eg, in the evening).
  • If severe diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps, or bloody stools occur, contact your doctor immediately. This could be a symptom of a serious side effect requiring immediate medical attention. Do not treat diarrhea without consulting your doctor.
  • Maxaquin is effective only against bacteria. It is not effective for treating viral infections (eg, the common cold).
  • It is important to use Maxaquin for the full course of treatment. Failure to do so may decrease the effectiveness of Maxaquin and may increase the risk that the bacteria will no longer be sensitive to Maxaquin and will not be able to be treated by this or certain other antibiotics in the future.
  • Long-term or repeated use of Maxaquin may cause a second infection. Your doctor may want to change your medicine to treat the second infection. Contact your doctor if signs of a second infection occur.
  • Stop taking Maxaquin and contact your doctor if you experience pain, swelling, or tearing of a tendon. Get plenty of rest and do not exercise until your doctor has determined the cause.
  • Maxaquin is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 18 years of age; safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been established.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Maxaquin during pregnancy. It is unknown if Maxaquin is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Maxaquin.

I started to take paxil about months ago, and it helps me to cope with depression.

I have to say it has made a hug difference for me! I also feel a certain confidence in my interactions and with interviewing.

It had decreased my anxiety significantly and I don't feel empty/hopeless as much. I had no side effects and it seemed to stabilize my mood.

I was told by my friend to try Zyban, as it helped him to quit smoking without any side effects.

I had tried to quit smoking for several years and it influenced badly on my life style, so I decided to change my life completely.

Honestly, I could not believe that pills can help me, but I was so wrong! Zyban saved my life.
