Levothroid Product Description
Levothroid is a synthetic thyroid hormone, used to treat hypothyroidism in pediatric patients and adults (including the elderly patients). Hypothyroidism develops when the thyroid gland stops producing enough thyroid hormones. A low level of thyroid hormones slows down the metabolic processes, resulting in lack of energy and increased sensitivity to cold.
Levothroid is prescribed as replacement or supplemental therapy of hypothyroidism of any etiology, for treatment or prophylaxis of various types of euthyroid goiters. High safety profile of Levothroid allows to use this synthetic thyroid hormone in the treatment of congenital or acquired hypothyroidism in infants.
The daily dose of Levothroid is adjusted individually, depending on indications. Normally Levothroid daily dose for adults varies from 75 to 200 mcg. The daily dose of Levothroid in pediatric patients is calculated depending on body weight, and should not exceed 200 mcg of Levothroid.
If the patient has missed his/her usual dose of Levothroid, he/she should take it as soon as possible, except in cases where the next dose of the antithyroid drug is supposed to be taken soon. Then the missed dose of Levothroid should be skipped, and the regular schedule of this drug application should be followed.
The recommended daily dose of Levothroid for newborns is 10-15 mcg per kg of body weight. For the treatment of severe hypothyroidism in infants and children, it is recommended to be started with 25 mcg of Levothroid per day, followed by dose increase every 2-4 weeks.
During the first few months of application of Levothroid thyroid agent, partial hair loss may occur in some children. This effect usually passes in a short time, and hair growth is recovered eventually. Consumption of certain foods (for example, walnuts, calcium-fortified orange juice, dietary fiber) may disturb the absorption of Levothroid.
Levothroid antithyroid drug should be stored in a dry warm place, away from light, at temperature of 15°C to 25°C.
