Flomax Product Description
Flomax is a selective blocker of the alpha-adrenergic receptors, which action provides relaxation of smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder neck, improving the flow of urine.
Flomax is used to treat lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men aged 45 to 75 years. BPH is the enlargement of the prostate gland. Men aged 45-50 years and more are more susceptible to this disease.
Enlarged prostate leads to compression of the urethra and interferes with the normal flow of urine from the bladder. This disease is characterized by frequent urination (especially at night), weak urinary stream, feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder, difficulty urinating, urinary incontinence during sleep.
The dose of Flomax, recommended for the treatment of the BPH symptoms, is 0.4mg per day (1 Flomax capsule), taken once. The patients with poor clinical response to the recommended dose are prescribed with an increased daily dose of Flomax of 0.8 mg after 2-4 weeks of treatment with this alpha adrenergic blocker.
If you remember that you have missed a dose of Flomax, take it as soon as possible. If you remember about the missed dose of the Alpha1-adrenergic blocker just before the next Flomax intake, just skip the missed dose without doubling the next one for catching up, and return to compliance with the usual intake schedule of Flomax capsules.
To obtain a stable therapeutic effect in the treatment of LUTS, the patients are advised to take Flomax capsules approximately at the same time (a half an hour deviation is allowed from the dosing time).
In the temporary discontinuation of Flomax or discontinuation, the treatment should be resumed with the 0.4 mg once-daily dose. Flomax capsules are not recommended in combination with inhibitors of the enzyme Cytochrome P450 3A4, like itraconazole, clarithromycin, erythromycin and ketoconazole.
Flomax capsules are intended for the treatment of functional symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia and are not intended for the treatment of hypertension.
Optimal temperature for Flomax storage is 25°C (it is allowed to store the tablets at 15°C to 30°C). Flomax tablets must be protected from the light and moisture.
Flomax Safety Information
Since the alpha adrenoreceptor blockers can lower blood pressure, Flomax may cause syncope in some patients (loss of consciousness from a sharp drop in blood pressure). At first symptoms of postural hypotension (weakness, dizziness), the patients are advised to sit or lie down until the symptoms pass.
Flomax is not recommended for patients, who had surgery on the prostate, patients with heart, kidney or liver disease. Flomax should also not be taken by patients, who suffer from haematuria (blood in the urine) and dysuria (painful urination) for more than 3 months. If the patient feels no improvement within 2 weeks, he or she should stop taking Flomax capsules and seek medical advice.
